Do I Really Need to Exfoliate My Skin? Yes!
Most people do not realize the importance exfoliation plays in an effective skin care regimen. The outermost layer of the skin is referred to as the stratum corneum. The stratum corneum is made up of flat, dead, skin cells.
Naturally our bodies produce enzymes that help break up the bonds that hold these cells together. This process results in shedding of the dead skin. Exfoliants help to assist this process. In turn, absorption of serums and moisturizers are enhanced allowing them to work better. Skin is more radiant with a decrease in fine lines and wrinkles. Skin sebum is less likely to get trapped in pores causing acnre breakouts.
Depending on your skin type there are many various products to meet your needs. These would include chemical exfoliants such as alpha and beta hydroxy acids as well as mechanical like bamboo or perfectly rounded sythetic beads. A few of my favorites are Tourmaline Charged Radiant Skin Refiner by Aveda and Tri-active Exfoliant by Innovative Skincare.
The importanct of exfoliation has been defined and types have been presented. How often should exfoliation be done? In my professional opinion at least twice a week. This also can vary according to age and skin tupe, climate, and season. An esthetician can guide you in the right direction as to what products are right for you as well as how often.
Make exfoliation part of your skincare regimen today. Your skin will love you for it!
